ANCHORAGE, Alaska—As the holiday season unfolds, food banks are bustling with donations. But it’s not just people benefiting from this spirit of giving; pets are receiving much-needed support too. Anchorage Animal Care and Control (AACC) has a community pet food bank to help ease the financial strain many families face.
Joel Jorgensen, the Community Outreach Manager at AACC, explains that the holidays can tighten budgets. “On average, we assist about 400 households every month. During the holiday season, usage spikes, especially around Thanksgiving and Christmas,” he said.
The AACC doesn’t just provide food; they also offer toys, collars, and leashes to help pet owners. “No one should have to give up their pet during the holidays because of financial issues. It’s tough for both the family and the animal,” Jorgensen added.
Local community members are stepping up. Megan Miller recently donated cat food and blankets, sharing how she seized the opportunity while grocery shopping. “I saw cat food on sale, and I thought, why not help out?” she said. Cat food is particularly in demand this season, with Jorgensen highlighting it as one of the most requested items at the shelter.
Statistics show that pet ownership can bring emotional support during tough times. A survey by the American Pet Products Association (APPA) revealed that 70% of U.S. households own pets, and many consider them family. This attachment makes it even more important to support pet owners during challenging periods like the holidays.
The AACC is open every day for donations and pickups, allowing the community to contribute and receive help at their convenience.
With this support, families can focus on what matters most: keeping their pets at home during the holiday season.
