Greenville, S.C. – The Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport is stepping up to support its employees during the ongoing partial government shutdown. Many staff members, including TSA workers, are currently facing financial strain as they have not been paid.
To help, the airport is organizing a food drive to collect non-perishable food and household items. Donations can be dropped off at two locations from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. starting Friday:
– The Parking Valet Kiosk (at the front curb)
– The Information Center (near baggage claim)
This initiative echoes a similar effort during a federal government shutdown in October 2025, when the community rallied to support TSA agents and other federal employees affected by the crisis.
Kevin Howell, the President and CEO of the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport District, emphasized the importance of TSA and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers. “They play a vital role in ensuring passenger safety and maintaining airport operations,” he said. Howell expressed gratitude for the community’s willingness to help those in need.
Historically, government shutdowns affect various sectors, leading to significant impacts on workers and the services they provide. In past shutdowns, community support initiatives have proven vital for those impacted.
During this shutdown, statistics show that about 800,000 federal employees are going without pay, leading to anxiety and uncertainty for many families. This reality underscores the importance of local community support during tough times.
