Middle Child, a popular restaurant in Fishtown, is hosting its sixth annual “Gallerytessen” silent auction. This quirky event showcases unique artworks, from a lamp shaped like butter to a giant crumpled-up Taylor Pork Roll sculpture. The goal? Raising funds for Juntos, an organization that advocates for immigrant rights.
The auction takes place on Monday at 1232 N. Front St. More artists than ever before are participating, many of whom are staff or regulars at Middle Child. Their creations revolve around the theme of “food and friendship,” showcasing a range of styles and materials, from paintings to mixed-media pieces.
Sadie Pennington, the assistant manager, has been at the helm since the event started in 2021. Initially aimed at supporting independent music venues during the pandemic, the auction quickly found its own purpose. The first year raised over $6,000 for the National Independent Venue Association. Sadie and restaurant owner Matt Cahn knew they had struck a chord.
“It’s about community and artistic expression,” Cahn explains. Many auction items are created by people they know personally, fostering a sense of connection. The auction’s growing popularity has encouraged artists to explore creative limits. Last year, a neon sign of hugging penguins and a glass ham sparked a bidding war that made headlines.
Pennington emphasizes that Gallerytessen is more than just an art auction; it’s a social event aimed at bringing people together. This year, artists collaborated on pieces like the butter lamp, showcasing how the local art scene thrives on community spirit.
“Food and friendship” remains an open theme, allowing for varied interpretations and exciting discussions. Over the years, the auction has raised more than $18,000 for various local nonprofit organizations. This year’s selection of Juntos reflects current social issues and the restaurant’s commitment to supporting undocumented workers.
Cahn highlights the fear many in the restaurant community feel due to immigration issues. “We want to do anything we can to help. Whether that’s offering training sessions or supporting organizations that provide legal resources, it’s essential right now.”
While there’s no strict fundraising target this year, they hope to reach at least $4,000 to aid Juntos. Bidding is already underway online, and the artworks will be on display at Middle Child from 7-9 p.m., followed by an afterparty at Pip’s, with part of their earnings going to Juntos as well.
This blend of art, community, and social activism makes Gallerytessen a standout event worth attending. It not only supports a vital cause but also showcases the vibrant creativity of Philadelphia’s local artists.
