The Jim Wells County Veterans Office is organizing a Christmas food drive on Saturday, December 13, to help veterans in need during the holiday season. This effort aims to ensure that those who have served our country can enjoy a warm meal even in tough times.
Abelardo Ortiz, a retired soldier, shares his thoughts on the struggles many veterans face. “It’s tough out there. Some of our veterans don’t have enough to eat, especially during Christmas,” he says. Ortiz was drafted into the Army in his 20s. He trained at Fort Bliss and served as a radio operator, which kept him away from the front lines. However, he recognizes that many veterans have not been as fortunate.
Recent statistics from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities show that over a million veterans across the U.S. rely on SNAP benefits. Locally, Daniel Salinas, the Jim Wells County Veterans Officer, helps about 200 veterans every month with various needs. He emphasizes the importance of the food drive. “With prices going up, this is a chance to provide some extra support, especially during the holidays,” Salinas explains.
The food drive will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the old bank building located at the corner of North Cameron and East Main Street. Donations of food, cash, and gift cards will be accepted until December 22. Every contribution can make a meaningful difference, ensuring that veterans get the meals they deserve during the festive season.
