A federal judge in New York has turned down Sean “Diddy” Combs’ request for bail. The music mogul, convicted last month on charges related to prostitution, will stay in jail until his sentencing in October. Although he was acquitted of more serious charges like sex trafficking and racketeering, facing prison time has serious implications.
Judge Arun Subramanian stated that Combs didn’t prove he deserved to be released. He pointed out Combs’ history of violence in his relationships, saying that increasing bail wouldn’t change the situation. Notably, during the trial, Combs’ defense claimed he had consensual encounters, but the judge emphasized that the evidence showed otherwise.
Looking at Combs’ current living conditions in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, his attorneys have raised concerns about the safety and treatment of inmates. The judge acknowledged the complaints but remarked that staff have been able to ensure Combs’ safety despite recent incidents of violence.
Combs, 55, faces a potential sentence of up to ten years for each prostitution-related charge, although the prosecution estimates he might receive 51 to 63 months, roughly four to five years. He has been in jail since September 2024 and will receive credit for approximately ten months served.
The case highlights ongoing discussions about the treatment of prisoners and the justice system’s handling of sex-related crimes. According to a recent study by the Vera Institute of Justice, incarceration rates for similar crimes have declined over the years, reflecting a shift in public opinion and legal approaches.
