One major factor fueling this trend is ease of access. “You can find nitrous oxide in smoke shops, gas stations, and even online on platforms like Amazon,” Dr. Vohra noted. This widespread availability makes it easy for anyone to obtain it without fully understanding the risks.
This rise in misuse has drawn attention from public health experts. According to a 2022 report from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, approximately 1.2 million people in the U.S. had used nitrous oxide recreationally that year, a trend that raises significant concerns. As data for 2024 is being evaluated, Dr. Vohra expresses hope that this information will spark discussions about potential legislation to restrict access to nitrous oxide for recreational use.
