Residents in the Northeast woke up to a surprise last Saturday: snow covered the ground and decorated the trees, even as Easter hinted that spring was just around the corner. The snowfall stretched from Albany, New York to Maine, dropping around two to five inches overnight, as reported by the National Weather Service.
Even though spring began on March 20, this kind of late-season snow isn’t unusual. Abbey Gant, a meteorologist in Albany, mentioned that a few inches of snow in early spring is pretty common for the area. For many who live in or near these winter-weary regions, it’s almost expected to see snow even in April.
In Maine, Michael Clair, another Weather Service meteorologist, echoed this sentiment. He pointed out that “this is sort of what our spring looks like.” The state could still experience more snow before warmer weather finally settles in. As snow continued through Saturday, forecasts predicted clearer skies for the upcoming week, bringing some relief to those tired of winter’s grip.
Jill Woodworth, who has lived in Massachusetts for years, finds April snow both routine and startling. It’s not unusual, but it’s just like, ‘Oh my God,’” she reflected, observing the slow transition into spring with flowers budding and trees starting to bloom. She recalled Aprils with much heavier snowfalls but noted that this particular storm left her yard with just a light dusting of about two inches.
Interestingly, April snow isn’t just a regional quirk; it’s a phenomenon that dates back many years. Historical weather data shows that late snowfalls have occurred across the region consistently. For instance, in April 1982, parts of New York and New England saw snow accumulation rates of up to two feet.
While the snow may feel like a throwback to winter, it comes with its own charm that many locals have come to accept. As Woodworth humorously said, she might not need to shovel, but she’ll still brush off her car before heading out for her morning coffee.
Recent studies indicate that changes in climate can lead to more unpredictable weather patterns, including late-season snow. This could mean that residents may experience similar surprises in the future.
So while the Northeast enjoys its temporary winter wonderland, those living there still hold onto the hope that warm weather is just around the corner. After all, spring in the Northeast has a way of shining through, even if it has to battle the occasional late snowstorm.
