Recent surveys reveal a growing concern among Thais about environmental issues. Major disasters, PM2.5 pollution, and factory accidents top the list of worries. For instance, 46% of respondents mentioned disasters in Central and Southern Thailand. Issues like the river crisis in Chiang Rai were noted by 10%, along with fears around dugong deaths and the spread of invasive blackchin tilapia.
Many people are taking action. About 47% said they’re reducing plastic waste by recycling or using reusable items. Around 31% support eco-friendly products, while 10% have taken steps like using solar panels. Still, some individuals haven’t made any changes yet.
When asked about political priorities, a clean air act stood out, with 57% of respondents supporting it. Integrated water management and waste management approaches were also important to many, highlighting the urgency for action in these areas.
Dr. Wijarn Simachaya, from the Thailand Environment Institute (TEI), expressed concerns about three linked crises: climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. All these issues stem from unsustainable practices. He warned that climate change is leading to extreme weather, affecting agriculture and increasing flash flood risks in cities.
Moreover, a decline in biodiversity is troubling. Invasive species, like blackchin tilapia, harm local ecosystems and threaten livelihoods in fishing communities. This points to a lack of coordination among agencies to address these challenges.
Pollution, too, poses serious threats. PM2.5 levels from various sources and rising plastic waste not only harm the environment but also public health. Increasing healthcare costs and potential impacts on economic competitiveness make addressing pollution critical.
Overall, these insights show that environmental issues are no longer sidelined. As people’s concerns rise, it’s clear that political leaders must prioritize sustainable policies to secure a better future for Thailand.
