The action-packed police drama SWAT won’t return for the 2025-26 season. CBS has officially canceled the series for a third time, meaning there won’t be a ninth season. The eighth season will wrap up in May, but the exact number of remaining episodes isn’t clear.
SWAT stars Shemar Moore as Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, a former Marine leading a special team in Los Angeles. The cast also includes Jay Harrington, David Lim, Patrick St. Esprit, Anna Enger Ritch, and Niko Pepaj. Together, they tackle high-stakes missions while navigating personal challenges. Hondo’s team, known as the 20-Squad, is filled with strong characters like seasoned officer Deacon Kay and loyal Zoe Powell.
During its eighth season, which aired on Friday nights, the show averaged a rating of 0.29 in the 18-49 demographic, reaching about 3.95 million viewers. This marks a noticeable decline in viewership compared to the previous season, dropping by 20% in the demo and 15% overall.
This isn’t the first time SWAT faced cancellation. Initially canceled after season six, it was brought back due to fan demand. It got renewed for a seventh season, and CBS even managed to negotiate an eighth season with Sony Pictures Television. However, this time the network decided to cancel it without discussions for a possible renewal.
Executive producer Andrew Dettmann expressed his sadness over the cancellation, highlighting the commitment and hard work of the cast and crew. “It’s been a pleasure to work alongside such dedicated people,” he shared. Shawn Ryan, another executive producer, echoed similar sentiments and thanked the fans and crew for their support throughout the years.
