The George Mason golf team kicks off its Spring Championship season at the Dorado Beach Collegiate Tournament in Puerto Rico from February 22-24. This exciting event will take place at the TPC Dorado Beach Sugarcane Course, which measures 7,122 yards and has a par of 72.
Last year, the Patriots finished 11th in a competitive field of 16 teams. David Fuhrer led the way with a solid performance, recording a final round of 71. This year, Mason will compete against 15 other teams, including well-known schools like UNCG, Illinois State, and Georgia State.
In 2024, Mason improved its standing, finishing 10th out of 17 teams, showcasing the program’s growth. This year, the team will be anchored by Vaughn McMeans, who had an impressive fall season, averaging 70.6 strokes. His two individual wins are rare achievements for the program, with only three players achieving it before him.
Here’s the lineup for George Mason:
• Vaughn McMeans
• Philipp Krone
• JJ Powell
• Dave Fuhrer
• Uzair Mirza
• Sivawong “Putter” Aukrawat (ind)
As the team prepares for the tournament, it’s worth noting that collegiate golf has seen growing competitive balance, with many teams showing significant improvement year over year. A report from the NCAA revealed that roster diversity and enhanced training methods have contributed to more exciting tournaments, making outcomes less predictable.
Following the Dorado Beach event, the George Mason team will host the sixth annual Babygrande Golf Donald Ross Collegiate Classic from March 9-11 in Pinehurst, N.C. This is another opportunity for the team to showcase its talent on a national stage.
