Switzerland Calls on Nations to Present Bold Climate Goals at COP30: Join the Movement for a Sustainable Future!

Switzerland is gearing up for COP30, urging all nations to ramp up their greenhouse gas reduction targets. Felix Wertli, the country’s environmental ambassador, emphasizes the need for bold commitments, especially from major emitters. The UN Climate Change Conference kicks off on November 10 in Belem, Brazil, where nearly 200 countries will discuss advancing the Paris Climate Agreement.

Despite global challenges, Wertli believes the commitment from many nations to collaborate is a victory in itself. The conference will focus on updating each country’s climate pledges, which are reviewed every five years. “We need to assess what has been done and identify where improvements are necessary to meet the 1.5-degree target,” he says.

In January, Switzerland set a goal to reduce emissions by at least 65% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels, largely through domestic initiatives. The Swiss delegation is advocating for increased international investment in climate protection and greater private sector involvement.

Wertli acknowledges a decline in political focus on climate issues in many countries. He points out that, unlike the US, which withdrew from the Paris Accord during Donald Trump’s presidency, no other country has followed that lead. Currently, efforts are still falling short of the 1.5-degree Celsius goal, although projections show warming has decreased from 4°C to an estimated 2.3°C to 2.8°C since 2015.

This highlights the ongoing struggle against climate change and the importance of international cooperation. As we move towards COP30, the urgency for concrete actions and commitments is more significant than ever.
