Luke Wilson, a 6’9″, 255-pound center, is transferring to Syracuse after playing two seasons at Appalachian State. He has accepted a written offer of athletic aid to join the Orange, marking an exciting new chapter in his basketball career.
Before his time at Appalachian State, Wilson played at Augusta Christian School in Georgia. He helped lead his team to a remarkable 26-5 record in the 2022-23 season, securing the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) 4A State Championship. In a nail-biting game, they edged out Cardinal Newman 47-44 to clinch the title, adding another championship to their 2021-22 win against First Baptist School.
At Appalachian State, Wilson redshirted his freshman year. During his first active season, he played in 30 games, averaging only 2.9 points and 2.6 rebounds per game. Despite limited minutes, he excelled defensively, ranking ninth in the Sun Belt Conference with 32 blocked shots. The team finished with a 17-14 record.
His second season saw a significant turnaround. Wilson started in 30 of 32 games and boosted his performance, averaging 10.7 points and 8.3 rebounds. He notched double-digit points in 20 games and had more than ten rebounds in 13 contests, earning the title of Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year. His 55 blocks ranked second in the conference, a testament to his impact on the court. The Mountaineers finished the season with a respectable 19-13 record.
Moving to Syracuse, Wilson joins a team with high aspirations and a legacy of strong performance in NCAA basketball. His journey reflects a growing trend: players aiming to enhance their skills and visibility through strategic transfers. In recent years, nearly 1,500 NCAA men’s basketball players entered the transfer portal, emphasizing the importance of finding the right fit for one’s career.
Experts suggest that transferring schools can benefit players in many ways, including exposure to higher competition levels and enhancing overall development. As Wilson steps into this new role, fans can expect to see how he continues to evolve and contribute to the success of the Syracuse Orange.
