Syracuse University Athletics Welcomes Owen to the Softball Coaching Team!

Travis Owen has recently joined the Syracuse softball coaching staff as an assistant coach. Head coach Shannon Doepking is excited about Owen’s addition, highlighting his extensive experience in the sport.

Owen brings over a decade of coaching to Syracuse. He spent the last three seasons at Northwestern Ohio, an NAIA program, where he led the Racers to record-breaking achievements. Under his guidance, the team secured three straight 30-win seasons, including a remarkable 35 victories last spring. They also set a new record with 17 conference wins in 2025. Notable statistics from his time there include 83 stolen bases and impressive slugging and on-base percentages.

Owen’s coaching journey also includes a stint at DBat San Antonio, where he focused on training athletes with personalized coaching and nutrition plans. His role helped athletes improve not just their skills but also their overall health.

Before Northwestern Ohio, Owen coached at the University of Minnesota Crookston. In just his first year, he doubled the team’s win total from the previous season and set new records. He also played a key role at Northern Colorado as the recruiting coordinator and hitting and pitching coach, helping the team achieve a new Division I win record.

His coaching career began at Lyon College, where he managed to produce one of the best finishes in the program’s history. Additionally, he gained international experience coaching in New Zealand with the Howick Softball Club.

Interestingly, data from surveys show that college sports recruiting has become more competitive over the years. A 2021 study found that nearly 70% of high school athletes turn to social media to showcase their skills. This trend highlights the importance of effective coaching and smart recruiting strategies in today’s athletic landscape.

Owen holds a Bachelor of Science in Business and a Master’s in Coaching, Health, and Physical Education. His diverse background and proven track record make him a valuable addition to the Syracuse softball team.
