Syracuse University Honors ICT: Breaking News and Insights

On June 9, ICT was honored with the Lorraine Branham Award at the Mirror Awards ceremony in Syracuse, New York. Managing editor Jourdan Bennett-Begaye, a Syracuse University alum, accepted the award on behalf of ICT. She shared that this recognition is especially important given the current political landscape.

“Receiving the Lorraine Branham Award during such pivotal times highlights the need for Indigenous voices in journalism. An American democracy thrives only with diverse perspectives. This award is a testament to the incredible work ICT has accomplished over the last 40 years, thanks to the dedicated journalists who help Indigenous communities tell their stories,” Bennett-Begaye said.

The Lorraine Branham Award, created in 2021 in memory of former Newhouse Dean Lorraine Branham, recognizes media outlets that promote inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility. Past recipients include Brown Girls Doc Mafia and 19th News.

Mark J. Lodato, dean of the Newhouse School, noted that ICT plays a crucial role in covering Indigenous communities, particularly those in rural areas lacking local news sources. “ICT’s growth as a multimedia platform is vital. It provides accessible content that builds trust with readers and fills news deserts across North America,” he explained.

According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, communities with robust Indigenous media coverage tend to have more engaged citizens. The survey also showed that 67% of respondents believed diverse media representation enhances their understanding of different cultures.

The ceremony also featured several juried journalism awards, with sportscaster Bob Costas receiving the Fred Dressler Leadership Award. The event underscores the importance of recognizing outstanding journalism, especially in challenging times.
