At least three people have lost their lives, and nine more have been injured after a knife attack in Taipei, Taiwan. The assailant, 27-year-old Chang Wen, started his violent spree by detonating smoke bombs at the main metro station. He then moved to a shopping district, stabbing people along the way. Reports indicate he later died after falling from a building. The reasons behind his actions are still unclear.
Violent attacks like this are uncommon in Taiwan, a place known for its low crime rates. The last similar incident occurred over a decade ago, in 2014, when a man killed four people on a subway train.
This tragic event unfolded during Friday’s evening rush hour. Videos on social media show chaos as people ran for safety, witnessing Chang in a baseball cap and dark clothing, tossing smoke bombs. He was armed with a large knife, walking past cars in a busy street.
Reports suggest a brave man attempted to confront the attacker but was struck with a blunt object and later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. Chang then proceeded to Zhongshan metro station, about 800 meters away, where he set off more smoke bombs and continued his assault.
In response to the attack, Taiwanese Premier Cho Jung-tai ordered heightened security at metro stations, railways, and airports. He stated that authorities would dig into Chang’s background to understand his motives. President William Lai also assured the public of a thorough investigation.
Historically, mass violence in Taiwan is rare. In the aftermath of the 2014 subway attack, the government took significant steps to enhance public safety. As of today, a recent survey shows nearly 70% of Taiwanese citizens feel safe in their daily lives, underscoring the rarity of such violent acts.
