Students like Willie Murdock are already feeling the thrill of flight. After his first solo flight, he expressed how confident and calm he felt. “The takeoff was smooth. It’s a wonderful feeling,” he said, highlighting the joy of flying.

The course aims to prepare students for their FAA commercial pilot certificates. Vontasia Smith, another student in the program, shared her experience as well. She noted that she learned about aircraft principles and lift, saying, “The training truly prepared me for my first solo flight.”

Moton Field, where students are learning to fly, is significant. It’s the same ground where the Tuskegee Airmen trained during World War II, making this experience even more meaningful for the students.

Both Murdock and Smith recognize the weight of their journey. Murdock finds it humbling to walk in the footsteps of aviation pioneers. Smith, as an African American female, feels a sense of responsibility to contribute to society and inspire others.

Statistics show that diversity in aviation is still lacking. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), in 2020, only about 2% of pilots were African American, and only 5% were female. Programs like this could change those numbers, encouraging a new wave of diverse pilots.

With interest soaring, Tuskegee’s Aviation Science program has a waitlist filled with students eager to join. This new generation of pilots might just take to the skies in the future, making history of their own.
