NAIROBI: Tamil Nadu is making waves in climate and biodiversity efforts. At the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) in Nairobi, Supriya Sahu, the Additional Chief Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forests, shared the state’s effective model for turning environmental ideas into real action.
During a side event titled “Solutions for a Resilient Planet: Turning Knowledge into Action,” Sahu was joined by leaders like Izabella Teixeira from the International Resource Panel and Frankie Orona from the Society of Native Nations. They discussed the need for a united approach—what Sahu calls a “whole-of-government and whole-of-society” strategy.
To break down departmental silos, Tamil Nadu established the Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company (TNGCC), India’s first state-owned, not-for-profit entity focused on climate action. “We realized we needed a coordinated effort,” Sahu said. This approach has led to four major climate missions: the Green Tamil Nadu Mission, Climate Change Mission, Wetlands Mission, and Coastal Restoration Mission. These initiatives have successfully planted over 110 million native trees and created significant areas of new mangroves.
With a coastline stretching 1,068 kilometers, Tamil Nadu is also restoring its coastal areas. This work helps strengthen resilience against climate impacts while prioritizing the involvement of local and indigenous communities in decision-making.
Recent surveys reveal that 64% of people in India are increasingly concerned about climate change. This focus adds urgency to initiatives like those in Tamil Nadu. Experts argue that inclusive strategies not only mitigate climate risks but also empower communities. By integrating different sectors and prioritizing local input, Tamil Nadu showcases a model that other regions might want to replicate.
