At the UN climate conference in Bonn, Germany, Aishat A. Barde, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change in Taraba State, Nigeria, made a compelling argument. She called for more involvement of local governments in global climate efforts as preparations ramp up for COP30 in Belém, Brazil.

Barde highlighted the unique situation in Taraba State. It has a wealth of biodiversity and natural resources, but it faces serious climate challenges. Issues like flooding, drought, soil erosion, and desertification threaten this region.

She stressed an important point: while global goals matter, real progress happens locally. Barde shared several initiatives from Taraba that align with the Global Climate Action Agenda:

1. Institutional Reform: The Ministry of Environment is now the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, focusing on better coordination for climate governance.

2. Community Engagement: The state is running awareness campaigns, especially targeting women through clean cooking programs.

3. Budget Commitment: In 2024, Taraba allocated 5% of its budget to the Re-Greening Taraba Initiative to support afforestation efforts.

4. Tree-Planting Drive: A campaign planted 2 million trees, using a mix of economic and native species to fight land degradation and improve carbon absorption.

5. Climate Change Policy: Taraba drafted its first-ever Climate Change Policy and Action Plan aimed at creating a resilient future. Goals include achieving 90% renewable energy use by 2060 and significantly reducing transport emissions by 2030.

Barde also called for global support. She emphasized that local governments are closest to the problems and solutions. While partnerships with federal bodies and organizations like the Under2 Coalition are promising, there’s a pressing need for resources, technology, and direct access to climate funding.

This call to action resonates in a world where grassroots efforts can make a significant difference. A recent report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) shows that local initiatives can lead to faster climate action. By empowering regions like Taraba, we can collectively tackle climate change more effectively.
