Target is ramping up its grocery game with a focus on fresh food, and they just unveiled their fourth food distribution center in three years. This latest center, located in Thornton, Colorado, is the biggest yet, covering 529,000 square feet and supporting 129 stores across 11 states. It promises to speed up deliveries, getting food to stores up to two days faster than before.

This new facility is special because it consolidates shipments, allowing for more efficient deliveries. Amy Probst, Target’s senior vice president of food and beverage supply chain, emphasized that this improvement lets customers depend on them for high-quality meals and snacks.

The investment in the Thornton center is significant, at $367 million. Alongside this, Target is also expanding its presence in Colorado. They plan to open a new store in Firestone and remodel four existing locations, with more openings on the horizon for 2027.

Target’s commitment to enhancing its grocery section has led to the addition of 3,000 new food items just this past quarter. According to Target’s Chief Merchandising Officer, Cara Sylvester, this is part of the largest grocery overhaul in over a decade.

Interestingly, a recent survey found that 60% of consumers prefer shopping for groceries at stores like Target due to the convenience of one-stop shopping. This trend indicates a shift toward supermarkets that offer a broader selection of quality food products. As grocery shopping becomes more competitive, retailers are increasingly focused on delivering fresh and diverse food options.
