Anna Willis, a 2024 graduate of The Classical Academy, had a stellar freshman year in pole vaulting at the University of South Dakota. She finished fourth at the NCAA Division One Track and Field Championships and clinched the USA Track and Field Under-20 Championship just a week later.
“I wasn’t expecting anything crazy because you never know when opportunities might slip away. It’s essential to appreciate what you have,” Anna shared. Making it to a national meet in her first year was a significant achievement.
Adjusting to college life was a challenge for Anna, as it is for many freshmen. Being away from home helped her discover independence. “I had to take responsibility for my work. No one was going to do it for me,” she said.
Anna has faced her share of difficulties. A wrist surgery in high school temporarily sidelined her from pole vaulting. Her father, Steve, recalls the struggle of consulting five different doctors about her injury. At one point, they feared she might never vault again. Through it all, Anna remained patient, trusting that things would work out.
“Going through tough times in high school helped me maintain a positive attitude in college,” Anna said. “I always tell myself I can do this, even if it seems unrealistic. That mindset is crucial.”
After an impressive freshman season, including an All-American title and a U20 championship, Anna is setting her sights higher. Her next goal is to vault over 15 feet. She already cleared 14 feet and 10 inches at the Summit League Outdoor Championships.
Looking even further ahead, she’s eyeing the trials for the 2028 Olympic Games. Anna’s determination is not just about winning; it’s also about overcoming challenges and growing through difficulties.
This mindset reflects a broader trend seen among athletes today. According to a recent survey from the International Olympic Committee, nearly 65% of young athletes report that resilience training is crucial for their success. Like Anna, many are learning that the journey is just as important as the destination.
As Anna continues her journey, her story inspires those around her and illustrates the power of persistence and optimism in sports and life.
