MILAN – Just hours before the gold medal game, Columbus Blue Jackets captain Zach Werenski and Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin had a heartfelt idea. If the U.S. won, they wanted a team photo with the family of the late Johnny Gaudreau.
“I felt Johnny’s presence the whole tournament,” Werenski shared. “It felt like he was here with us.” He remembered Johnny as a teammate and friend, emphasizing the importance of his legacy. They managed to include Johnny’s children—3-year-old Noa and her brother Johnny Jr., who turned 2 on game day—in the celebration.
The U.S. team secured their first men’s hockey gold medal in 46 years by defeating Canada 2-1 in overtime. Despite facing numerous shots, U.S. goalie Connor Hellebuyck played brilliantly, making crucial saves.
Larkin expressed the deep loss felt by the team, saying, “Johnny and Matty should be here. To have Johnny Jr. and Noa on the ice felt right.” Their family’s support brought a special touch to the victory.
The tragic loss of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew in August 2024 due to a drunk driving accident weighs heavily on the players. Larkin reflected on the emotional impact of having Johnny’s kids celebrate with them, saying, “It just shows the lasting impact he’ll forever have on this team.”
Recent studies highlight the rising concern about drunk driving fatalities, illustrating the importance of advocating for road safety. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, around 11,654 people died in alcohol-related crashes in 2020, underlining the ongoing need for awareness and prevention.
Back on the ice, defenseman Brock Faber felt a wave of emotion witnessing the moment with Johnny’s family. “His jersey will always hang in our locker room. His legacy will live on,” he said. Each player carries memories of Johnny, reminding them of their bond, both on and off the ice.
Auston Matthews noted, “His impact on us is special. We spent a lot of time with him.” His jersey has been a part of the team’s journey, reminding them that he’s with them in spirit.
