TEANECK — Dre Perrin and Tonza Houston are set to open their second restaurant, Sweet T’s Southern Eatery, on February 1. This new location will be at 166 W. Englewood Ave., just down the road from their original Montclair spot. After a year of running a ghost kitchen, they’re excited to welcome diners for a full sit-down experience.
Perrin is well-known in the community as the owner of Bespoke Men’s Grooming and Spa, the oldest Black-owned business in Teaneck. His barbershop, located just a short walk from the new restaurant, has even had a street corner named after him for his contributions to the area.
This venture began because Perrin and Houston, both Teaneck High School graduates, were frustrated by the lack of good southern cooking nearby. “We were tired of traveling far for a great meal,” Houston said, who, despite her background in textiles, has a passion for southern cuisine.
Perrin’s roots run deep in southern cooking. He grew up in a family where many recipes relied heavily on pork. After witnessing the health struggles of his grandfather, he wanted to create a healthier version of soul food. “We wanted something lighter and more nutritious,” he explained.
Houston, who has a Caribbean heritage, adds a unique flavor to their menu, filled with family recipes like Georgian Style Okra and Grandma Sarah’s Crispy Deep-Fried Chicken. They focus on everyday foods with healthier spins, ensuring their dishes remain authentic yet nutritious.
The duo sought advice from a childhood friend, Carlos Swepson, now the chef-owner of BLVD Bistro in Harlem, who shared valuable insights on how to maintain rich flavors while avoiding unhealthy ingredients. With a commitment to clean cooking, they proudly serve a pork-free menu.
Opening a restaurant has its challenges. Perrin and Houston quickly learned the ropes of managing a business that demands constant attention. “It wasn’t easy,” Perrin admitted. They had to adapt to managing a diverse staff, many of whom have other career ambitions. But through experience, they’ve become more skilled at running the business, dividing responsibilities based on each person’s strengths.
They hope that the loyal customer base they created through their takeout service will transition into regular diners at the new restaurant. “We want to create a charming spot where families and friends can enjoy healthy, authentic soul food,” said Perrin. Their journey from food lovers to restaurant owners reflects both passion and determination, and they can’t wait to share their culinary dream with the Teaneck community.
