Olivia Andre, a 19-year-old from Congo, is finally set to be released from ICE custody in Texas. After months of uncertainty, a judge ordered her freedom, and Olivia couldn’t contain her joy. “I was in shock and so happy,” she shared.
Olivia has been detained at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center for about six months. Upon hearing the news, she immediately called her mother, saying, “Mama, I’m coming home!” The excitement echoed through her family, who’ve been praying for her release. However, doubts lingered; she called her mom the next day to confirm that everything was still on track.
Olivia’s journey to the United States has been heartbreaking. Her family fled violence in Congo, losing her 8-year-old brother during their escape. They applied for asylum in the U.S. in December 2022, but after a long process and a denial, they sought refuge in Canada. Unfortunately, due to a U.S.-Canada agreement, they were returned to the U.S. and detained.
While her family was released earlier, Olivia’s detention was a heartbreaking reminder of the state’s challenges and deficiencies. “It’s hard to be separated from my family. I lost my brother on this journey, and I was worried about being alone,” she reflected.

She dreams of reuniting with her family, visiting her favorite places in Maine, and simply enjoying the freedom she fought so hard to attain. “I want to be in front of the water and maybe scream, ‘I have freedom,’” she said, longing for the joy of a life without barriers.
