Tehri Garhwal’s Own Subedar Sunil Negi Triumphs on Mount Everest, Elevating His Village’s Pride!

Srinagar: Subedar Sunil Singh Negi from Chamiyala village in Uttarakhand recently achieved a remarkable feat by summiting Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak at 8,848.86 meters, on May 27, 2025. His achievement is part of the Silver Jubilee Mount Everest Expedition organized by the Indian Army, which celebrated 25 years of climbing this iconic mountain.

This historic expedition kicked off on April 3, 2025, with a flag-off by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Delhi. The team traveled to Nepal on April 12, and went on to set a world record with 22 mountaineers reaching the summit together—an unprecedented number for a single ascent.

Subedar Sunil, serving in the 6th Garhwal Rifles, joined the army in 2001. His passion for mountaineering started early; in 2004, he completed six months of specialized training at the High Altitude Warfare School in Gulmarg. Since then, he has successfully climbed several peaks over 7,000 meters, including Mount Nun and Mount Kangju Kangri.

Today, he takes on the role of an instructor at the High Altitude Warfare School. Although he currently lives in Dehradun, his roots in Chamiyala remain strong.

The rise in mountaineering interest in India reflects a broader trend. According to a report by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, adventure tourism in India has grown by over 60% in the past decade. This increase speaks to growing enthusiasm for outdoor activities and the spirit of adventure, resonating with stories like Sunil’s.

Subedar Sunil Singh Negi’s journey showcases not just personal achievement but also the hard work and dedication of the Indian armed forces in promoting adventure sports.
