Temple University Campus on Alert: Police Investigate Multiple Weekend Assaults

NORTH PHILADELPHIA – This past weekend, Temple University was shaken by several unprovoked assaults. Occurring late Saturday and Sunday, these incidents prompted a swift response from campus safety officials.

Temple has been reviewing video footage all day, working hard to identify those involved. Some students have expressed their fears following these events, with Sofia Dubrin-Meneses, a junior, saying, “It is scary. I feel horrible for the students affected.”

The Department of Public Safety is looking into three separate assaults from Sunday night. One involved a Temple student who fortunately did not sustain serious injuries. The other two assaults involved juveniles, leading to seven arrests by Temple University Police.

Freshman Julia Le shared her concerns, noting, “Knowing this could happen anywhere makes me a bit nervous.” This sentiment resonates with many students who feel uneasy about their safety on campus.

On Saturday evening, around 7 p.m., officers responded to a large group of unsupervised juveniles near Broad Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue. Initially calm, the situation escalated as tensions rose later in the night. Assaults were reported near Temple Towers and 12th and Montgomery Streets. Again, while some students were physically unharmed, the psychological toll is clear.

Despite a heavy police presence due to the local K-12 spring break, concern among students remains. Freshman Kelly Donnelly said, “It’s scary to think that something like this can happen any day.”

Police are continuing to gather clues while offering counseling services to students affected by the violence. The community’s response has been largely cautious, seeking more protective measures. This situation mirrors trends seen on college campuses nationwide, where rising concern about safety is prompting discussions about law enforcement presence and student support services.
