Terry McLaurin and the Commanders Settle Contract Stalemate with Exciting 3-Year, Million Extension

Terry McLaurin has signed a new three-year, $96 million deal with the Washington Commanders, ending a contract dispute that saw him briefly request a trade. This report comes from well-known sports insiders, Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport.

McLaurin’s new contract is a big win for the Commanders, especially as they aim to build on the impressive rookie season of quarterback Jayden Daniels. Daniels was a standout in 2024, earning Rookie of the Year honors and leading Washington to a 12-5 record, ultimately reaching the NFC Championship game.

During that season, McLaurin caught 13 of Daniels’ 25 touchdown passes. Their chemistry has made them one of the most dynamic pass-and-catch duos in the league.

At 29, McLaurin has established himself as one of the NFL’s top wide receivers. This is evident from his consistent performance—he’s been selected for the Pro Bowl twice in the past three seasons and was named a second-team All-Pro in 2024. He’s remarkably durable, having played all 17 games in each of the last four seasons.

Since joining the Commanders in 2019, McLaurin has climbed the ranks as Washington’s primary receiving threat. He notched 82 catches for 1,096 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns last season, a notable improvement from his previous high of seven touchdowns.

While he started training camp as a holdout due to contract disputes, McLaurin eventually returned after missing the first week. His efforts to negotiate a better salary reflect a wider trend in the league, as many top receivers are landing contracts worth over $30 million annually.

Interestingly, player age plays a role in negotiations. Most teams hesitate to give large contracts to players nearing 30. Tyreek Hill, who is 31, is the only receiver over 30 making such significant money. In contrast, younger stars like Ja’Marr Chase have secured even more lucrative deals.

Overall, McLaurin’s commitment to the Commanders not only highlights his talent but also reflects a strategic push to enhance their competitiveness moving forward.
