Tesla has rolled out a new software update featuring Grok, their latest language model created by xAI. However, it doesn’t interact with the car yet.
Elon Musk announced earlier this week that Grok would be integrated into Tesla vehicles. Now, the update is being sent to users, but there’s a catch: it doesn’t control any car functions. Think of it as having Grok on your mobile device, now available on the car’s screen instead.
Right now, Grok is only accessible in Tesla vehicles produced since mid-2021 that have the AMD infotainment system. To use it, you will need Premium Connectivity or a WiFi connection.
While Grok may not be able to issue commands, the update includes some interesting features. For instance, if your Tesla has ambient lighting, those lights can now sync with your music. You can make the lights match the color of your current album for a more immersive experience.
Tesla has also improved the audio settings. You can now save multiple sound profiles to match your preferences or those of your passengers. Other updates include:
- A revamped Dashcam Viewer that allows zooming in and adjusting playback speed.
- Improved charging information in the navigation system, offering details on valet services and parking options.
- A new onboarding guide on the center display to help new Tesla drivers.
However, many experts believe Tesla has some catching up to do. A recent survey showed that over 60% of consumers expect advanced voice recognition in vehicles to control various functions. Meanwhile, other automakers have already begun integrating this technology. For example, some cars in China allow voice assistants to interact closely with the vehicle, even using cameras to provide real-time feedback based on what they see.
Currently, Tesla’s Grok serves as a basic tool, lacking the deeper integration that many users may expect. As consumer preferences evolve, it’s crucial for Tesla to enhance Grok’s functionalities to stay competitive in the market.
