TEXARKANA, Texas (KSLA) – Exciting news is buzzing at Texarkana College! After three years of hard work, they have launched their new Aviation Mechanics Technology program.
On Monday, January 13, the college celebrated this milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at their hangar located at Texarkana Regional Airport. The first group of students has already started their journey.
This program addresses a significant shortage of aviation mechanics. According to instructor Brandon Sanders, Boeing predicts that North America will need about 143,000 more mechanics in the next 20 years.

“This program provides a great career path in aircraft mechanics. Starting pay can be around $40 per hour, and students will gain the skills needed to land well-paying jobs. Mechanics are in high demand, which also allows opportunities to travel while working with cutting-edge aircraft technology.”
“In just one year, students can earn their certification to work on airplane engines and frames. This quick path means they can enter the commercial aviation field sooner. A&P technicians are trained to handle various tasks, from fixing engines to maintaining aircraft. They work on everything from small planes to large commercial jets. Technicians often start with hands-on jobs and can eventually move into management roles. With increasing job opportunities, the average salary for A&P technicians is around $70,000, and those in commercial aviation can earn even more.”
“There’s a real gap in training new mechanics, so those who graduate will have solid job prospects,” Sanders added.
Alex Luke from New Boston is among the first 20 students in this program. He shared, “I’ve tried various jobs in the past, but this is the first time I feel I have a real chance to build a meaningful career.”
Sanders also noted that A&P mechanics at Southwest Airlines can earn around $86,000 annually, which is pretty much the industry standard before overtime.
The program was developed after discussions with Paul Mehrlich, the director of Texarkana Regional Airport. He believes it will positively impact the airport and the surrounding area.
“This will create a skilled workforce right here in Texarkana, allowing us to attract companies that need technicians. It’s a step toward bringing more jobs to our community,” Mehrlich said.
With only one year of training needed to become a certified aviation mechanic, this program offers a swift route to a thriving career.
