More than 5,000 people gathered at the Capitol in Austin on Saturday to protest President Donald Trump’s proposal to redraw Texas’ congressional districts. This move aims to create a more favorable landscape for Republicans in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
The newly proposed map sparked a nearly two-week quorum break by Texas House Democrats. It’s estimated that the change could provide Republicans with at least five extra seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Earlier this month, over 50 House Democrats fled the state to delay this map’s approval during the legislature’s first special session.
During the protest, Congressman Greg Casar, a Democrat from Austin, spoke passionately about the situation. He criticized Trump, saying, “Trump doesn’t have a plan to win the election; he has a plan to rig the election.” This was in reference to the current trend where several Republican-led states, including Texas, Ohio, and Florida, are looking to redistrict.
Interestingly, Democratic-led states are also reacting. For example, California’s Governor Gavin Newsom recently revealed new proposed maps, signaling that this gerrymandering is a widespread tactic across the political spectrum.
At the rally, former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke noted that Republicans’ actions stem from a fear of losing power. He warned that if they fail to maintain control in the House, it could lead to accountability for potential misconduct. This accountability could even involve impeachment for Trump if Democrats reclaim the chamber.
However, there is a lot of uncertainty. Congressman Lloyd Doggett pointed out that the immediate goal is to stop the current redistricting bill. He admitted that if this bill passes, they need a plan for the future. Doggett emphasized the importance of voting in the 2026 elections, even in districts that lean Republican. He highlighted that Trump’s absence on the ballot might help Democrats gain ground in critical areas.
Recent polls show that Biden had nearly half the votes against Trump in several Hispanic-majority districts. This could offer a unique advantage to Democrats if they mobilize effectively for the upcoming elections.
As the Texas House Democrats prepare for their second special session, it remains to be seen how they will navigate these challenges. They will likely have fewer numbers to oppose the Republicans’ push for new congressional maps.
