The New York strip steak, known for its marbled texture and tenderness, has been a popular cut of meat for years. Recently, however, Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick stirred the pot by suggesting a new name: the Texas strip. This proposal comes as Texas boasts the largest cattle population in the country.

In a post on social media, Patrick shared that he is working on a resolution with the Texas State Senate to officially adopt this new name. His goal? To support Texas ranchers and promote the beef industry in his state. He also highlighted the political undertone of his statement, suggesting that New York shouldn’t take credit for what Texas farmers work so hard to produce.

Not everyone is on board with the name change. Some steakhouses in New York have expressed their disapproval. Harry Sinanaj, president of Ben & Jack’s Steakhouse, responded to the proposal, calling it “ridiculous” and insisted that he would continue to refer to it as the New York strip. It appears that the sentiment in New York is to keep the name as it is.

The exact origins of the term “New York strip” are a bit fuzzy, but it’s often linked to Delmonico’s, a famous restaurant established in 1827. This restaurant is known as the first in the United States, and while the Delmonico steak might refer to a ribeye today, it once may have encompassed what we now know as the strip steak. Regardless, this cut quickly gained popularity in New York City.

So, whether you call it the New York strip or the Texas strip, one thing is certain: this steak is beloved by many across the country.
