Rep. Tony Gonzales, a Texas Republican, is in the spotlight after being pushed into a May runoff in his primary race. Just a day later, the House Ethics Committee announced it will investigate allegations of sexual misconduct against him.
The committee is looking into claims that Gonzales treated a staff member, Regina Santos-Aviles, unfairly, possibly offering her special favors. This comes on the heels of explicit text messages published by The San Antonio Express-News. Although these texts haven’t been independently verified by NPR, they led to increasing calls for Gonzales to step down. Tragically, Santos-Aviles died by suicide last September.
Gonzales has denied any wrongdoing. However, in a recent interview with conservative radio host Joe Pagliarulo, he acknowledged that he “made a mistake” and expressed remorse. He emphasized taking full responsibility for his actions and mentioned that he had reconciled with his wife and found forgiveness through his faith.
He also addressed concerns about the power dynamics at play. Gonzales noted the importance of understanding all the facts regarding the situation. According to the House’s code of conduct, lawmakers are prohibited from having sexual relationships with their staff, highlighting the significance of the ongoing investigation.
Interestingly, House Speaker Mike Johnson has voiced that Gonzales should come clean with his constituents but also emphasized the principle of due process. Johnson remarked that if mere accusations become the standard for removing someone from office, it could lead to widespread resignations in Congress.
Such ethics investigations can often stretch for months. The committee will announce the subcommittee members assigned to this case shortly.

Recent statistics show that in 2022 alone, 54% of voters expressed concerns about sexual misconduct in Congress, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability in leadership roles.
