Robert Preston Morris, the founder of a prominent megachurch in Texas, recently completed a six-month jail sentence for sexually abusing a child in the 1980s. Morris, now 64, was released from an Oklahoma jail shortly after midnight.
In 2022, he pleaded guilty to multiple counts of lewd acts against a child. As part of a plea deal, he received a 10-year suspended sentence, with the first six months served behind bars. The abuse started in 1982 when the victim, Cindy Clemishire, was just 12 years old. Morris was then a traveling evangelist staying with the family in Hominy, Oklahoma.
Morris led Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas, one of the largest churches in the country, until he stepped down in June 2024 amid these allegations. He was later indicted by an Oklahoma grand jury.
As part of his sentence, Morris must register as a sex offender and will be supervised by Texas authorities. He is also responsible for covering his incarceration costs and paying restitution to the victim.
Cindy Clemishire, now in her 50s, shared her relief when Morris was sentenced. “Justice has finally been served,” she stated, reflecting on her traumatic past. Morris later issued an apology through his attorney, expressing regret for his actions. He mentioned seeking private forgiveness from Clemishire’s family years ago, acknowledging the pain he caused.
