Thales U.K. has struck a deal with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) to supply high-tech air defense systems to the Indian Army. This partnership focuses on Laser Beam Riding Man Portable Air Defence (LBRM) Very Short Range Air Defence (VSHORAD) missiles and launchers. According to Pascale Sourisse, the CEO of Thales International, the initial phase will see a limited number of missiles and launchers delivered this year through an emergency procurement process. In the long run, the order could reach thousands of missiles.
Thales, known for its prominent role in the Rafale jet and Scorpene-class submarines, is keen on increasing its sourcing from India and plans to boost its engineering workforce from 1,600 to a broader team. Sourisse mentioned the goal of achieving 60% indigenous content in the products manufactured by BDL, indicating a commitment to local partnerships and development.
During Aero India this week, Thales announced the start of initial supply of Starstreak high-velocity missiles, with the first deliveries expected within six months. This deal is part of a broader strategy to not only fulfill Indian defense needs but also tap into export markets.
Hiring is also a key focus for Thales. Sourisse emphasized the importance of skills, stating the need to double their engineer count in India. This growth reflects their confidence in India’s potential to support global operations.
Localization remains a priority for Thales. They aim to not just meet Indian demands but also create products for the global market. Their strategy includes leveraging their own workforce, establishing partnerships with major Indian firms, and collaborating with Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Currently, over 75 companies are part of Thales’ supply chain, contributing to both Indian and international projects.
Thales is also expanding into civil aviation. They plan to localize maintenance and support activities in Gurugram to assist clients like Air India, for whom they will provide in-flight solutions for 51 aircraft. Recently, Thales Alenia Space partnered with NIBE Space to supply a high-resolution optical satellite for a new earth observation project.
Additionally, Thales has achieved a significant milestone by delivering the 7,000th T/R module for the RBE2 AESA radar used in Rafale jets, showcasing their commitment to advancing aerospace technology in India.
