Jalon Walker Foundation and Food Lion Share Thanksgiving Meals in East Spencer
When NFL linebacker Jalon Walker isn’t tackling quarterbacks, he’s giving back to his community. Recently, he teamed up with Food Lion to deliver 250 Thanksgiving meals to families in East Spencer.
The event took place at Southern City Tabernacle AME Zion Church, where Jalon grew up. He was joined by his parents, Curtis and Sheka Walker, and volunteers from local Food Lion stores to help distribute the meals.
“It’s an amazing time to give back,” Jalon shared. “I’ve wanted to do this for years, and it’s a blessing to finally help my community.”
Each family received a full Thanksgiving meal, including a turkey, veggies, canned sides, and desserts, all provided by Food Lion. This initiative is part of the Food Lion Feeds program, which has donated over a billion meals since it started in 2014. Remarkably, they aim to reach 3 billion meals by 2032.
Lisa Owens, the director of operations for the Salisbury area, noted, “Partnerships like this make our work possible. It’s a great day for everyone involved.”
Families in need were identified with help from Rowan-Salisbury Schools, ensuring that those who could benefit most received support.
The Walker family isn’t new to community service. Curtis Walker previously ran a food drive while he coached at Catawba College. He recalled, “Giving back was our mission. Seeing the smiles on people’s faces makes us all happy.”
The church’s pastor, Tajuan Kyles, emphasized the connection to their mission. “We’re focusing on making an impact,” he said. “It’s more important than ever to address food insecurity and lift spirits.”
As cars lined up for meals, many recipients took a moment to meet Jalon, adding a personal touch to the day.
This event reflects a growing trend of athletes and local organizations stepping up to support their communities. In recent years, statistics indicate that food insecurity has risen, impacting more households than before. According to Feeding America, 1 in 8 Americans faced hunger in 2021.
Local initiatives like these not only provide immediate relief but also foster a sense of togetherness and hope. As the holiday season approaches, efforts like these remind us of the importance of community support and kindness.
