DETROIT – The Green Bay Packers celebrated Thanksgiving in style with a thrilling 31-24 win over the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.

- Fourth downs made a difference.
The Packers were bold early on, opting to go for it on fourth down instead of settling for field goals. In the first quarter, on a fourth-and-3 from the 22, quarterback Jordan Love threw a beautiful pass to Dontayvion Wicks in the end zone. Wicks made a remarkable catch, putting the Packers ahead 10-0.
Love remarked, “At fourth down, you’ve got to make a play. To get those seven points was huge.”
Later, with a fourth-and-1 from the 2, Love connected again, this time with Romeo Doubs, extending their lead to 17-7.
- Defense stepped up in the second half.
The Lions fought back, scoring before halftime to narrow the gap to 17-14. But the Packers’ defense couldn’t be ignored. On fourth-and-3 from their own 47, Micah Parsons and Isaiah McDuffie hemmed in Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs, stopping the play and shifting momentum back to Green Bay. Just moments later, Love threw a 51-yard touchdown to Christian Watson, widening the lead again.
“That’s what we aim for – to capitalize on big defensive stops,” Love stated, acknowledging the teamwork involved.
In the fourth quarter, with the game on the line, a big defensive stop denied Detroit a chance to score a field goal that could have narrowed the gap further.
- Clutch plays when it mattered.
As the Lions mounted a drive late in the game, a sack from Parsons prevented them from scoring a touchdown. Instead of a touchdown, they only managed a field goal, keeping the Packers up by seven. “Micah was a force out there,” noted Head Coach Matt LaFleur.
With just under three minutes left, the Packers had to run down the clock. On a critical fourth-and-3, with stakes high, Love connected with Wicks again, sealing the victory.
- Highlight performances and injuries.
Jordan Love shone, throwing four touchdown passes and earning a 124.2 rating. This puts him in elite company with Brett Favre as one of the few Packers quarterbacks to perform this well on Thanksgiving.
Wicks had a standout game with six catches for 94 yards and two touchdowns, showcasing his growth after struggles earlier this season with drops and injuries. LaFleur praised his talent, affirming, “He has always shown potential.”
However, not all news was good. Defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt suffered a serious ankle injury late in the game. LaFleur expressed concern, saying, “That’s a tough loss for our team.”
- NFC North race intensifies.
With the win, the Packers improved to 8-3-1 and will keep an eye on the Bears’ game against the Eagles. If Chicago loses, Green Bay could take the top spot in the division. Regardless, the rivalry will heat up next week as the Bears head to Lambeau Field.
Love emphasized the importance of upcoming games in the tight NFC North race, saying, “Every game is crucial; you’ve got to control your own destiny.”
