Before its release, The Monkey generated impressive buzz, boasting a social media reach of 154.5 million across various platforms like TikTok, YouTube, X, Facebook, and Instagram. This number is 16% higher than the average for horror films, according to RelishMix. This strong engagement comes as Neon juggles promotional efforts for its Oscar contender, Anora.
The film has been well-received post-release, with audiences expressing excitement for writer/director Oz Perkins’ work. Fans of Perkins are excitedly comparing this film to Final Destination and works by Stephen King, sharing their enthusiasm online. Comments like, “Oz Perkins knows how to scare us,” and “this looks like it’s going to outdo Final Destination” highlight the anticipation.
The trailer for The Monkey also sparked significant interest, particularly due to its thrilling visuals, including appearances by Elijah Wood and a striking scene of a woman running with a flaming stroller.
Captain America: Brave New World, from Disney/Marvel Studios, is having a solid second weekend. The film is expected to bring in about $30 million this weekend, following a Friday gross of $7.5M for a running total of around $142M.
StudioCanal/Sony’s Paddington in Peru is performing reasonably as well, with a Friday haul of $1.4M and a weekend estimate of $6M. This brings its total to $24.7M by Sunday.
Meanwhile, DreamWorks Animation’s Dog Man brought in $1.2M on Friday, with projections of $5.2M over the weekend, accumulating a total of $78M.
Chinese animated sequel Ne Zha 2 earned around $850K on Friday and is looking at a weekend total of about $3M, reaching $14.8M in ten days.
Lionsgate’s faith-based film, Unbreakable Boy, is expected to end the weekend with about $2.2M after making $850K on Friday.
Looking ahead to future opportunities, Neon is also in the spotlight this weekend, as their Cannes-winning film, Anora, is nominated for Best Feature at the Film Independent Spirit Awards. Success there could bolster its chances for an Academy Award nomination, following several recent accolades.
