The Rise and Fall of Andriy Yermak: Unveiling Zelensky’s Right-Hand Man’s Dramatic Downfall

Andriy Yermak has been a significant figure in Ukraine’s government, serving as Chief of Staff to President Volodymyr Zelensky. His influence was vast, often appearing at the president’s side during crucial moments, including Zelensky’s memorable speech as conflict loomed over Kyiv in February 2022.

However, Yermak’s time in power abruptly ended after anti-corruption investigators raided his home, revealing a growing public frustration with the unchecked power of an unelected official. This came at a time when many Ukrainians were already grappling with the impact of the ongoing war.

Zelensky and Yermak’s relationship began in 2011 when they met through their respective careers—Zelensky as a TV producer and Yermak as an intellectual property lawyer. After they successfully campaigned for the presidency in 2019, Yermak quickly became a central player in Ukrainian politics, taking part in defining foreign policy and military strategies.

Yet, in a twist of fate, public support for Yermak started to dwindle as corruption scandals emerged. A controversial decision by Zelensky in July 2025 to place Ukraine’s anti-corruption bodies under government control sparked protests, severely damaging the administration’s image. While Zelensky claimed it was to prevent Russian interference, the public and European Union saw it differently, leading to a swift reversal.

As autumn approached, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau disclosed troubling findings, implicating high-ranking officials—including Yermak’s associates—in a scheme that siphoned approximately $100 million from public projects. This stirred further outrage, given that the country was already suffering from Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure. Citizens faced regular power outages amid ongoing hostilities.

Reactions from the community were intense. One Kyiv resident expressed deep concern for families affected by the war, highlighting the emotional toll it takes on everyone. Even though Yermak denied any wrongdoing, speculation lingered about his knowledge of the alleged corruption.

In a recent negotiation with U.S. officials for a peace proposal, Yermak managed to secure some concessions despite the chaotic backdrop. His resignation raises questions about stability in Ukraine during this challenging period. Some see his exit as an opportunity for reform within the government.

Olga Rudenko, editor of the Kyiv Independent, considered Yermak’s departure “good news,” emphasizing the strength of Ukraine’s democratic institutions, which are capable of holding powerful figures accountable—even amidst a war.

As Ukraine continues to navigate this complex landscape, the resilience of its political system will be closely watch. The future holds uncertainty, but the current climate demonstrates a collective push toward transparency and integrity.
