‘The View’ Reacts to MAGA Backlash: Is Tom Hanks’ ‘SNL50’ ‘Black Jeopardy’ Sketch Making Trump Voters Seem Racist?

The View recently discussed the backlash from some MAGA supporters regarding Tom Hanks’ skit on SNL50, where he reprised his character Doug in a segment called “Black Jeopardy.” In this skit, Hanks portrays a Trump supporter who gets flustered when host Kenan Thompson tries to shake his hand.

Joy Behar commented on the controversy, stating, “The reality is they’re making Trump voters seem like racists, and that’s why they’re upset.” She added that she doesn’t believe it’s fair to generalize any group in this way.

Behar empathized with Trump’s supporters, explaining that many were misled. “They thought grocery prices would drop, but they went up. They believed inflation would decrease, yet it hasn’t. They thought benefits like Medicaid and Social Security were secure, but that’s not the case. So, their feelings of insult are understandable,” she said.

Sunny Hostin noted that Hanks first played Doug in 2016 and called the skit a powerful commentary, saying it reflects how Black culture is integral to American culture. She pointed out that Hanks’ hesitance to shake Thompson’s hand echoes a recent political moment when a senator’s husband refused to shake hands with Vice President Kamala Harris.

Alyssa Farah Griffin, a Republican and former White House advisor, shared her view that the outrage seems excessive. Meanwhile, former co-host Meghan McCain criticized Hanks on social media, suggesting he is out of touch with regular Americans and is losing relevance.
