NOVI SAD, Serbia (AP) — On Saturday, thousands gathered in Serbia as university students kicked off a new phase in their fight against President Aleksandar Vucic. This comes after over a year of large protests challenging his rule, which many consider increasingly autocratic.
In Novi Sad, demonstrators chanted “thieves,” expressing anger over government corruption. This corruption is believed to have played a role in a tragic train station disaster in November 2024 that claimed 16 lives, sparking widespread demands for change.
Students are calling for immediate reforms. They want corrupt officials barred from politics and a thorough investigation into their finances. This move indicates a shift from just protesting to proposing solutions for a better future.
The gathering was titled “What victory will mean.” Last month, the students claimed to have collected around 400,000 signatures supporting their call for early elections. Despite these efforts, Vucic has not committed to a timeline for elections.
Vucic has been in power for over a decade, initially promising to steer Serbia toward European Union membership. However, he has since bolstered ties with Russia and China, facing criticism for suppressing democratic freedoms and allowing corruption to flourish.
Public support for the student movement is strong, especially among those disillusioned by mainstream politicians. Vucic has accused the students of acting on behalf of Western interests, claiming they aim to “destroy Serbia.”
According to a recent survey, approximately 60% of Serbians feel dissatisfied with the political situation, highlighting the growing discontent with Vucic’s administration.
