COP28 also highlighted the importance of addressing loss and damage. A new fund was established to assist countries that are severely affected by climate change, acknowledging that some impacts are unavoidable and require immediate support.
As countries implement adaptation measures, sharing knowledge becomes crucial. Learning from successful strategies and local experiences enhances effectiveness. Simon Stiell, the UN Climate Change Executive Secretary, emphasized the importance of community involvement and data at COP29, stating, "Communities’ lessons must serve as a strong foundation for comprehensive adaptation plans."
International collaboration is essential. Countries must work together to build resilience and protect their people and economies from climate change. Since 2012, the Adaptation Committee has focused on enhancing adaptation actions. Their recent report provides insights into the progress of global adaptation efforts and highlights lessons from the first global stocktake.
At COP29, the Committee celebrated 30 years of climate adaptation with a special event and launched an Interactive Portal. This resource tracks the adaptation actions of various countries, allowing for ongoing updates and learning opportunities.
