Three members of the Orange made their mark at the NCAA East Prelims, advancing to the quarterfinals on the first night of competition.
Jamir Brown shined in the 110-meter hurdles, winning his heat with a time of 13.45 seconds. He finished well ahead of his competitors, securing an automatic spot for Friday’s quarterfinals. In contrast, Isaiah Hayes placed 32nd, clocking in at 13.98 seconds, which brought his season to a close.
Benne Anderson also earned his place in the next round of the 1,500-meter run. He finished third in his heat with a time of 3:48.85, enough to secure an automatic qualifying spot. Unfortunately, Drew Zundell’s 3:53.44 meant the end of his season, following a strong performance in the All-ACC championships last week.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Elijah Mallard clinched the last automatic spot in his heat with a strong finish at 50.63 seconds. He narrowly outpaced Cincinnati’s Camden Beatty by just 0.02 seconds. Interestingly, this heat was one of the fastest of the evening.
Peter Walsdorf led the way in the 10,000-meter run, finishing 14th with a time of 29:13.59—just two spots shy of qualifying for the NCAA final. Assaf Harari followed in 16th place with 29:18.38. Connor Ackley and Louis Small rounded out the competition in 29th and 31st, posting times of 29:54.45 and 29:59.38, respectively.
As the competition continues, it will be interesting to see how the women perform in their first round, kicking off at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
Recent data shows that track and field events are becoming increasingly competitive. Athletes are constantly pushing their limits, and we can expect times to drop even further in the future. According to a 2023 survey of college athletes, 78% expressed a desire for more support and training resources, hinting at a growing dedication to the sport.
As we follow these athletes, it becomes clear that perseverance and drive are key factors in their success.
