Thrilling 5-Set Comeback: Lopes Triumph Over Washington State – Grand Canyon University Athletics

Grand Canyon University faced off against Washington State in an intense match on Saturday night at Global Credit Union Arena, stretching to five thrilling sets. The Lopes secured a 3-2 victory, marking their fifth straight win in the nonconference phase of their inaugural Mountain West season. This win also served as redemption for a prior loss to the Cougars during the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

Anaelena Ramirez led the Lopes with 20 kills, achieving a personal best and demonstrating her power on the court. Alongside her, Sophia Parlanti contributed 13 kills, and setter Taylor Kubacak facilitated plays with 26 assists and an ace. Notably, freshman Bella Nunez showcased her talent by achieving a triple-double, posting 10 kills, 21 assists, and 21 digs.

Defensively, the Lopes were solid with 64 digs, thanks to contributions led by Nunez and libero Bella Anderson. A highlight was GCU’s performance in the fifth set, where they faced an early 3-0 deficit but rallied back, ultimately taking the lead 11-8 with a crucial 6-0 run.

Macey Hughes, one of the freshmen, mentioned her belief in the team during tense moments. She shared, “When we were down, I still knew we were going to win.” Her confidence resonated throughout the team, who banded together to overcome obstacles.

Head coach Kendra Potts praised the team’s resilience after the match, emphasizing the importance of staying composed under pressure. This win was especially meaningful for the Lopes, as it allowed them to learn and grow when adversity struck.

The Lopes have shown determination this season, previously not dropping a set until this match. “You just beat a good team,” Potts said. Her recognition of the team’s hard work reinforced their spirit and growth.

As the Lopes prepare for their next challenge against Northern Arizona, it’s clear that their journey is just beginning. With an unbeaten start, their confidence is set. This season’s momentum might just be building toward something special.
