University and San Clemente’s boys tennis teams had strong performances in the CIF Southern Section playoffs, but their journeys ended in close final matches.
University faced Harvard-Westlake in the Division 1 championship. After a hard-fought battle, they lost 10-8 at the University of Redlands. The match was neck-and-neck, with University (19-4) leading 4-2 after the first round. However, Harvard-Westlake (18-3) fought back, tying it 6-6 as they entered the final round. JiHyuk Im had a standout performance, winning all his singles matches. The doubles duo of Reid Hashimoto and Tyler Chandler secured two victories, but it wasn’t enough for a fifth consecutive section title. Coach John Kessler confirmed that the team will compete in the SoCal Regional next week.
San Clemente also played well, reaching the Division 5 final against San Marcos. The match ended tied at 9-9 in sets, but San Marcos triumphed in the tiebreaker, with a score of 85-81 at The Claremont Club. San Clemente (12-9) made a strong showing, especially as Hleb Kauhanka swept in singles. It was the first time they reached the section finals since 2015, making their effort even more notable.
