Longwood and Maryland Eastern Shore put on an unforgettable game at the Joan Perry Brock Center. The Lancers, down by double digits, mounted a fierce comeback. However, Dorion Staples’ crucial shot with 56 seconds left in double overtime secured an 83-82 victory for UMES.
Jacoi Hutchinson was the star for Longwood, scoring a career-high 21 points and sinking all his free throws—10 for 10! This feat highlights the importance of free throws in close games. Longwood had five players in double figures, marking the third consecutive game they achieved this. Hutchinson, alongside Johan Nziemi (17 points), Elijah Tucker (12), and Alphonzo Billups III, and Elijah Jones (10 each), proved they can share the scoring load effectively.
On the Hawks’ side, Justin Monden led with 19 points, while Jaden Cooper and Zion Obanla added 17 and 15, respectively. Their teamwork showcased the range of talent UMES brings. Coach Ronnie Thomas acknowledged their tough schedule, mentioning that they’ve faced four Power 5 teams. “I knew they would come in here hungry,” he said.
The game kicked off with UMES racing to a 15-point lead. Longwood battled back, partly thanks to Alphonzo Billups III, who netted two three-pointers and scored all his points in the first half. The Lancers narrowed the gap to six by halftime, 41-35.
After the break, Hutchinson took charge, driving to the basket and scoring effectively. He found Tucker for a layup, putting Longwood ahead briefly at 54-53. Both teams traded leads as the game heated up, ultimately tying at 69 after regulation.
In overtime, Hutchinson kept pushing, helping Longwood tie again at 75. But UMES took control in the second overtime, thanks to Staples’ decisive three-pointer.
After this close battle, Longwood’s next challenge is a road trip to face Columbia on November 23.
