Highland Heights, Ky. – The Golden Grizzlies faced off against the Northern Kentucky Norse in their first Horizon League series over the weekend, splitting a doubleheader on Saturday.
In the first game, the Grizzlies struggled, losing 7-3. The Norse started strong, with Brielle DiMemmo and Brooke Keltner hitting back-to-back home runs in the first inning, quickly giving NKU a 3-0 lead. Kenzie Gulley and Jena Rhoads added to the score with an RBI triple and single in the second inning, pushing the lead to 5-0.
Oakland fought back in the third inning with an RBI single from Addison Kopp, reducing the gap to 5-1. Another home run from DiMemmo in the fifth inning put NKU ahead 6-1. In the sixth, Oakland rallied again: Addison Caldwell hit an RBI double, scoring Annabel Power, who had come in as a pinch-runner. Mary Newton followed with an RBI groundout, bringing the score closer at 6-3. However, the Norse sealed their victory with an insurance run later in the inning. Oakland’s offense included four hits, with Brooklyn Plitz leading with a triple.
Game two went much better for the Golden Grizzlies, who secured a 3-1 win thanks to stellar pitching from Kenna Bommarito. Oakland opened the scoring in the first inning when Maggie Murphy hit a triple, allowing Kam Troyer to score. Kayla Turmell later drove Murphy home, making it 2-0 early on.
The fourth inning saw Bommarito contribute with an RBI single, further extending Oakland’s lead to 3-0. NKU attempted a late rally in the seventh inning, scoring on a bases-loaded walk, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome. Bommarito’s complete game featured four strikeouts, allowing only one run during the contest.
The Golden Grizzlies will head back to Michigan, ready to take on Western Michigan University on Tuesday, March 24, at 2 p.m.
