Thrilling Doubleheader Split: University of Hawai’i Softball Takes on Cal Poly!

Softball Series Recap: Hawai’i vs. Cal Poly

The University of Hawai’i softball team had a mixed day against Cal Poly, splitting their doubleheader. They lost the first game 6-2 but bounced back strong, winning the second game 5-0. This series marked their sixth successful conference matchup this season.

With this split, Hawai’i stands at 15-9 in the Big West, tied for third with CSUN. Cal State Fullerton leads at 18-5, while UCSB is in second place with a 15-7 record.

Game One: Cal Poly 6, Hawai’i 2

Hawai’i started well, scoring two runs in the first inning. Carys Murakami and Milan Ah Yat both hit singles, allowing Liliana Thomas to double and drive them home. However, Cal Poly turned things around in the third inning, scoring three runs with key hits from Maddy Bermudez and Mylina Garza. They extended their lead in the fourth inning, adding three more runs.

Hawai’i attempted a comeback in the fifth but couldn’t convert their chances. Starter Addison Kostrencich took the loss, facing 7 hits and surrendering 6 runs in 3.2 innings. Millie Fidge pitched well in relief, allowing just one hit over 2.1 innings.

Cal Poly’s Kate Judy secured the win with a complete game, giving up 2 runs on 9 hits.

Game Two: Hawai’i 5, Cal Poly 0

In the second game, UH’s Macy Brandl shined, throwing a complete game shutout and improving her record to 15-6. She scattered 4 hits, striking out one and retiring the last 11 batters she faced.

Hawai’i’s offense came alive in the second inning. Following two outs, Kolbi Kochi walked, and Cierra Yamamoto hit a single. Chloe Borges then drove in Kochi with a hit that sent the crowd roaring. They managed to score 4 runs in that inning alone.

The Rainbows didn’t let up, adding another run in the third thanks to Kochi’s RBI single.

Cal Poly threatened to score, but Hawai’i’s defense held strong, preventing any runs from crossing the plate.

Upcoming Series

Hawai’i will return home for their final series against UC San Diego. The first game kicks off Friday, May 2, at 6:00 p.m. HT. This series is especially significant for head coach Bob Coolen, who will be honored during the game as he retires after 34 seasons. Saturday will also be Senior Day, where the team will celebrate its five seniors: Chloe Borges, Addison Kostrencich, Izabella Martinez, Alyssa Nakagawa, and Liliana Thomas.
