Brown Women’s Hockey Faces Tough Loss Against Princeton

Brown University’s women’s hockey team kicked off their ECAC season with a challenging match against Princeton, falling 4-2 at Meehan Auditorium.

The Bears saw goals from Monique Lyons and Margot Norehad, both of whom scored their second of the season. Jade Iginla and India McDadi assisted with key plays. In goal, Rory Edwards was impressive, racking up 31 saves.

The game started with Princeton striking first at mid-period when Edwards ventured too far from her net. A quick intercept led to Issy Wunder scoring the opening goal.

As the first period wound down, Brown found themselves on a penalty kill but managed to turn the game around. Lyons seized a chance during a breakaway, scoring shorthanded to level the score at 1-1.

In the second period, after Princeton regained the lead, the Bears equalized again. While down a player, Iginla skillfully passed to Norehad, who found the back of the net. However, the Tigers jumped ahead midway through the third after a swift 2-on-1 break.

Despite Brown’s efforts late in the game, they were unable to score again. Princeton closed things out with an empty-net goal in the final moments.

Key Highlights:

  • This loss marks the first for Brown against Princeton since October 21, 2023.
  • Lyons’ shorthanded goal was the first of its kind for the Bears since January 24, 2025.
  • Edwards’ 31 saves represent her best performance in nine games, a notable improvement over past matches.

Interestingly, women’s hockey is rising in popularity. A recent survey from the NCAA found that attendance for women’s hockey games has increased by 15% over the past three seasons, showcasing a growing fan base and interest in women’s sports overall.

In historical context, the Bears have been building their program over the years, with more investments in training and facilities. This shift has been crucial for their performance and competitiveness in the league.

As the season progresses, Brown will look to build on the lessons learned from this match, keeping their spirits high and preparing for upcoming challenges.
