Florida State Baseball’s Thrilling Extra-Inning Loss to Stanford
The No. 8 Florida State baseball team faced off against Stanford on Saturday, ending in a nail-biting 8-7 defeat after 11 innings at Sunken Diamond. This marked FSU’s first extra-inning loss of the season and only their second series loss overall.
The game was a rollercoaster, featuring five lead changes. Stanford jumped ahead 2-0 in the second inning, but FSU quickly answered back with four runs in the third. Not to be outdone, Stanford tied the game in the same inning and then took a 6-4 lead in the fourth. Florida State fought back, securing a temporary 7-6 lead, before Stanford sealed the win with a run in the 11th.
Brody DeLamielleure, a redshirt sophomore right fielder, shone at the plate with two hits, two RBIs, and one run. Chase Williams contributed two hits, two runs, and one RBI, while Nathan Cmeyla drove in two runs.
On the mound, junior Trey Beard started the game. He struggled a bit, allowing six runs, but he also struck out seven batters. Relief pitcher John Abraham kept FSU competitive by allowing just one run over four innings.
Statistically, FSU tallied seven runs on seven hits and left seven runners on base, while Stanford scored eight runs on ten hits. Both teams ended with two errors.
The matchup was marked by dramatic plays. Florida State’s four-run third began with an RBI single from Williams, which was followed by DeLamielleure’s double. Cmeyla’s sac fly capped off the scoring for that inning. However, Stanford’s ability to capitalize on FSU’s mistakes, including a couple of unearned runs, kept them in the game.
The competitive spirit was palpable throughout, reflecting a broader trend in college baseball. According to recent NCAA statistics, extra-inning games have become increasingly frequent this season, emphasizing the level of skill and fatigue players face.
As fans take to social media, many are expressing pride in their team’s resilience despite the loss. A notable trend on platforms like Twitter shows users rallying around the idea that this game reflects the growing competitiveness of college baseball.
Florida State will seek to bounce back in the series finale against Stanford on Sunday at 4 p.m. ET. The game can be streamed live on the ACC Network Extra.
