Oregon State Volleyball Triumphs Over Portland State in a Thrilling Five-Set Match

The Oregon State volleyball team faced a tough challenge against Portland State and emerged victorious after a gripping five-set match. This marked the first time this season the Beavers went the distance, showcasing their resilience on the court.

In the final set, the Beavers nailed an impressive hitting percentage of .389, propelled by two significant runs that ultimately led them to a 15-9 win. The match score was 25-22, 20-25, 25-11, 15-25, 15-9.

Several players shone brightly. Lauren Rumel led the team with 18 kills, while Alana Marrs added 15, Maëli Cormier chipped in 11, and Annika Hester contributed 10. The setters, Emma Lilo and Jackie Matias, each played a crucial role, combining for over 50 assists. Defensively, a solid effort from Alondra Paz (17 digs), Matias (13), Lilo (11), and Tia Shum (10) helped keep Portland State’s attack in check.

The Beavers took an early lead, winning the first set despite Portland State’s efforts to close the gap. Rumel’s six kills in the first set anchored the team as they pulled away late, ending the set at 25-20.

In the second set, Portland State turned the tide, establishing a strong lead and capturing the set 25-20. However, the Beavers responded fiercely in the third set, limiting Portland State to just a .032 hitting percentage and dominating the frame with a 25-11 victory.

The fourth set saw a shift, as Portland State rebounded with a strong offensive showing, hitting .433. The Beavers struggled, finishing the set with a .125 hitting percentage and making nine errors.

The decisive fifth set became a battleground. Cormier and Marrs stepped up, playing key roles in the Beavers’ comeback. After falling into a tie at 7, they surged ahead with two crucial runs, sealing the match with a solid defense that kept Portland State at a mere .118 hitting rate.

Overall, the Beavers restricted their opponents to a subpar .217 hitting percentage throughout the match, highlighting their defensive prowess.

With a current record of 6-4, Oregon State is set to return home this week for their West Coast Conference opener against Saint Mary’s (Calif.).

The matches ahead should provide valuable insights as the Beavers continue their journey through the season, aiming to build on their successful start. As they prepare, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the team evolves and handles the pressures of conference play.
