Thrilling Home Opener: Cougars Face Off Against Huskies in Must-See Showdown!

Washington State volleyball faced off against their rival, Washington, on September 17, 2025, at Bohler Gym. The match was intense, showcasing both teams’ strengths and strategies before the Cougars ultimately lost in four sets: 25-22, 23-25, 19-25, 21-25.

The Cougars started strong, taking the first set with a solid offense and strong blocking. Lucie Blažková led the team with 16 kills and two service aces. Mary Healy followed with 12 kills and five blocks, while Melina Christodoulou added nine kills and nine digs. Together, they displayed impressive teamwork.

WSU excelled at the net, recording 11 team blocks. Kate Hayhurst was a standout with six blocks, while Healy added five. Setter Italia Bernal contributed 27 assists and seven digs, supporting the team’s efforts effectively. Freshman Livia Ward also made her mark with 13 assists and an ace.

Defensively, Tinons Munar Galmés shone in the back row, leading with 17 digs. Eliana Ti’a supported the defense with nine digs and seven kills.

In the second set, the Cougars fought hard, tying the score at 23-23 before Washington pulled ahead. Despite their efforts, WSU struggled to maintain momentum in the following sets but pushed the Huskies in every rally.

Cougar fans took to social media to express both pride and disappointment after the match. Many highlighted the team’s potential, praising individual performances and encouraging the players to keep improving.
